Doing All to the Glory of God

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

-I Corinthians 10:31

Paul the Apostle, in writing to the church in Corinth, told them to give God the glory in everything. No matter what you are doing; be it eating a meal, being involved in some ministry, serving others, preaching, singing, or leading music, or even pursuing some hobby, do all to the glory of God. Someone might say, “Now, you’re saying that I am supposed to glorify God in every aspect of my life?” My answer would be, “No, I didn’t say that; God said that in His holy Word.” On the surface that seems like an unbelievably tall order. How do we glorify God in each and every aspect of our lives? First, the Word commands it and God won’t tell us to do something He knows we can’t do. Secondly, the Holy Spirit empowers us to glorify God in all aspects of our lives. Thirdly, we have the resources given to us by God for accomplishing this.

Understand that giving glory to God in all things begins with having lives that have been transformed to the image of Christ (as opposed to being conformed to the world), and minds that have been renewed by the Word of God (See Romans 12:1, 2). If our lives have been transformed and our minds renewed, then we will adopt an attitude that seeks to glorify God in all things. It begins with salvation. Once we come to faith in the Lord Jesus, we set about to line our lives up with His will. We no longer try to be like the world, but rather we seek to be like Jesus. We also seek to renew our minds daily through the Word of God and prayer. Every follower of Christ can grow spiritually by spending time daily in the Word of God and in prayer. Apart from these disciplines we cannot expect to grow spiritually, have renewed minds, or be able to glorify God in all things. However, though the Word and through dedicated prayer, we learn the power of walking with Christ and giving Him the glory – in all things.
